The four of us met for lunch and then saw The Fantastic Four. It was fun, but I wanted more super hero stuff. This is probably one of the weirdest things I've said in awhile, but perhaps the sequel(s) will be better. There were lots of interesting previews, most significantly one for the second Zorro movie. After they showed it, Larra said, "That looks stupid." I necessarily and rightly replied, "...and awesome!"
We sat around and talked for awhile. People got changed. Dinner at McCormick and Schmick's (excellent). Then we went to the thingy.
Although I'm not sure I could name many individuals I missed, it felt like a lot of the people I wanted to see weren't there. In retrospect, this is not surprising. The people I knew and spent time with in high school, like me, were only likely to show up to this thing out of curiosity. I didn't recognize at over 80% of the faces there. Nonetheless, I did get to catch up with some people I haven't seen in ten years. Some highlights/things I remember in which I use names that will make sense to very few of you:
- Allison Mecklem is a math teacher at our old high school. She acknowledges this to be weird.
- Jon Haeck is working on his composition PhD at UW.
- Gregg Pollack lives with his wife in Orlando, where he is a SCUBA instructor (I think).
- Scott Nelson still works in the family business. They own and manage apartments and he's working on hs MBA.
- Scott Schleiffer is an "investor in New York."
- Rob Stern and I talked about the old days at the Synagogue. He's marrying Aaron Potter's sister, which is only funny if you were in our youth group.
- Arlo Belshee rode the internet boom with a small company he started after college that created infrastructure for MMORPGs. He retired after four years, but he got bored, so now he's a consultant.
- Tova Pelz calls herself a geological engineer. She models force vectors and things from geological events, and uses the models to design structures that can withstand such events.
- Lauren Porter spent some time in San Francisco and some time as an activist. These two things may overlap. She's recently decided to become a K-2 teacher.
- Nikki Perry works with the Make a Wish Foundation as a mentor and tutor.
- I'm unclear what Evan Werner is doing, but he hasn't changed much.
- Nathan Kline thought I was Ari Shapiro, who was in the class behind us. Fortunatlely, I was able to tell Nathan what Ari is doing.
- Larra was made to feel young. Also, I didn't forget to introduce her too many times.
- Very few people seemed surprised to hear that I teach music.
